Parenting Books

Pregnancy and Baby

Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy

Moms on Call: Basic Baby Care 0-6 Months

Discovery credit: Melissa Davis
My new baby Bible. I bought this book for my second because of the daily schedules. It is amazing. Highly recommend for all moms, even for second or third babies. Learn how to set up a solid bedtime routine, how to transition your baby from sleeping swaddled to unswaddled, how to help your baby fall asleep on his/her own, how and when to introduce solid foods, how many naps baby should have, etc. They always say that babies don't come with an instruction manual, but this is pretty darn close. The biggest life-saver of this book was in the nap section about "twilight sleep." This was a huge mistake I made with my first-- thinking that she was done napping because she cried 45 minutes into her nap. Second baby is taking longer naps because I am letting her and we are all so much happier.

Mayo Clinic Guide to Your Baby's First Year

Track baby's development month-by-month with Mayo Clinic. Contains average growth charts for boys and girls, newborn care, and lots more.

Toddler

Moms on Call: No Nonsense Toddler Book

I'm still working my way through this one, but already love many of the principles like stop asking the toddler so many questions and don't end non-optional, routine directions with "ok?" It's super empowering and also makes me laugh out loud. Moms on Call sells all three books in a set on their website.

Oh Crap! Potty Training

We used this method for potty training, and it worked! If you're a novice who hasn't done any previous reading or research (which I was), skip to chapter 5 for the directions.

Finding Things

Mealime Discovery Credit: Kelsi Cook Heres

RECIPES: Delicious, creative, variety. This "meal planning app for healthy eating" is my go-to when I am out of meal ideas and tired of eating tacos every week. It's customizable for different diet types (vegetarian, vegan, etc.) and dietary restrictions. They have tons of creative dishes and are always adding more. Many of their recipes are easily adaptable. The app even makes you a shopping list that you can add to or modify.

ACTIVITIES: Discover kids' activities in your area. This is how I found the Sassy Cow Creamery tour. Libraries, farms, other places with kids' activities post their events here. It's a great way to figure out what's happening around you and make a plan for an otherwise empty and boring day.

Wirecutter Discovery Credit: Caleb White

PRODUCTS: Looking for the best travel stroller, carseat, crib mattress, pair of winter boots? Wirecutter has reviewed it all. They have a team that buys all of the products, tests them, reviews them, and finds the best. They suggest a best option, a budget option, and usually a third option as well. Some of my favorite mom products are Wirecutter reviewed.
