Friday Fun-Day: Our Visit to Sassy Cow Creamery

Enjoy some funny snippets from our tour of Sassy Cow Creamery last weekend. They are open for tours through August, Thursdays through Saturdays. Booking information and link at the bottom (not sponsored, just loved it).

Inside Our Visit to Sassy Cow Creamery

Me: "Can I book a dairy farm tour for tomorrow?"
Caleb: "This is a brave activity for you to want to do right now since you can't eat dairy."
Me: "It will be fun for Caroline. And we can all get out of the house."

We invited some friends to book ahead with us so that most of the 10-person tour was our group.

We strategically packed up during nap time, ate snack in the car and made the short drive up to Columbus. We stopped at the store to pick up our tickets, and it was packed. Sassy Cow ice cream is very popular!

We drove over to the farm, and it looked so clean, tidy, and fresh with a bright red and white barn. Caleb strapped on the baby carrier and baby, we donned our masks and walked in. A very friendly tour guide checked us in and directed us upstairs.

Since we were on the last tour of the day (3:30), the cows were being milked on their fancy rotating milking machine. It was FASCINATING, just fascinating for a person who grew up in the suburbs and only ever read about farms. In general, I love agritourism. My farm knowledge is very limited, but I love eating.

Me: "Whoever invented this rotating milking machine is a genius."
Tour Guide: "It adjusts the suction and speed to each cow's particular milk flow."
Me: "It's like a giant breast pump... a breast pump with AI."
Caleb: "Aren't you glad you don't produce 10 gallons of milk a day?"
Me: Blank stare.

Caroline watching the cows being milked on their fancy rotating, AI milk machine.

We learned about the farm, when cows have calves and how often, what cows eat and how much. It was just like what I had read in The Milk Makers by Gail Gibbons (see Farm Text Set).

Then, we saw the cows being milked up close. Caroline didn't like this part because it was a little bit loud and the cows are about 3-4 feet off the ground, so they seemed even bigger to her.

We walked over to the big cow barn and watched the cows eating and learned about more cool science things like cow bedding (no spoilers!), temperature preferences, and the benefits of cow fitbits.

On the way out, every child got to sit on the tractor (nice photo opportunity), and we all got a pint of milk. It was Caroline's first time having chocolate milk, and she LOVED it.

We needed to head home after the tour, but our friends went back to the shop to sample some treats and sent me a picture of their son playing on a tractor his size. That made his day.

Later at home...
Me: "We all smell like cows!"
Caleb: "That farm was incredibly clean."

I highly recommend this tour. We learned a lot, had fun, and it was something completely different from our everyday. We plan to return when I can eat dairy again.
